Taiwan Must and Will be Reunited With China – says Xi Jinping
The President of China, Xi Jinping, expressed his desire to reunite Taiwan with China, even as he warned that the later reserved the right to use force. Taiwan which is a breakaway from China (considered independent since 1950) had faced certain issues in the past such as:
- China insisting that a country can only have diplomatic ties with China or Taiwan, not both.
- China forcing foreign airlines and hotels to list Taiwan as part of China on their websites.
In line with the above, Xi Jinping considers Taiwan as a mere renegade province not a country, and vowed that Beijing will never promote any form of Taiwanese independence. Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen disagrees with this.

Elections in South Africa and Proposed Constitutional Amendment
Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa is set to lead the governing African National Congress (ANC) in it’s bid to extend its 25-year rule. The ANC’s idea is to amend the constitution in such a way that it will be easier to … white owned farms without compensation. Apart from the ANC’s political opponents who have vowed to sever the plan, few still believe that the ANC will lose on this journey towards amendment of the constitution because their reputation is already damaged by:
- High levels of unemployment
- Slow pace of land reform
All these are bound to raise citizens’ emotions ahead of elections.
Mali Villagers Killed in Armed Raid
At least 37 people have been killed in a raid by those believed to be traditional hunters. A similar clash which is always over access to water or land, occurred last year between the Dogon hunters and members of the Fula ethnic group which resulted into the death of hundreds of people. During the attack yesterday, a village chief and his family members were killed. While the Dogon accuses Fulanis of having ties to a jihadist group, the Fulanis also claim that the Mali’s military equipped the Dogons to fight them.
