CASH POLICY: ANARCHY LOOMS AS NAIRA NOTES SCARCITY CONTINUES

President Muhammadu Buhari speaking in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the extension of the validity of old 200 naira notes by 60 days as a solution to the ongoing cash policy in the country.

The President made the disclosure on Thursday in a nationwide broadcast on the recent implementation of the redesigned naira policy which has led to the scarcity of the notes. He said he has given approval to the CBN that the old N200 bank notes be released back into circulation.

The Supreme Court has declared that Nigeria’s old naira notes are still legal tenders. The case was brought against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the naira redesign policy. On Wednesday, February 15, the court adjourned proceedings until February 22.

Economists have appealed to the CBN to allow customers withdraw 100,000 Naira over the counter. They believe it will help curb the tension in the country.
