CASH POLICY: OLD NOTES CONFUSION AS BANKS CARRY OUT CBN DIRECTIVES

Due to the ongoing cash policy issues in the country, banks were in disarray over the implementation of the CBN directives on the collection of old banknotes in N500 and N1000 denominations over the weekend. The managing director of APT Securities and Funds, Mallam Garba Kurfi, said:

“The naira redesigning introduced may bring down economic growth due to lack of cash. The only way out of its present conundrum is for the president and the CBN to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court. Any other measure will be cosmetic at best. Three months isn’t a good time for a country of over 200 million people, a large informal and a vast rural economy.”

CASH POLICY

Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State has mentioned that the CBN withdrew 2 trillion naira from circulation and only replaced it with 400 billion naira new notes.

Remember the naira crises peaked last week before the President intervened. Buhari urged Nigerians to deposit their old N500 and N1000 with the CBN. The President also said the old N200 note would remain a legal tender for the next 60 days until April 10th.
